關於I Want It That Way（fans間自古以來已慣用縮寫IWITW表示），我一定會講起它的歌詞。

時間回到1999年，那時候互聯網（對我來講）剛入屋。要追Backstreet Boys（BSB，新好男孩）消息的話，有一位好朋友叫做backstreet.net。很慶幸當時已經有real player，一些已派台、但未出碟的歌都可以收聽甚至下載（我會用電腦僅有的能量經optical output線把歌抄寫入MD）。

backstreet.net強大之處在於，它連沒有出街的歌都找得到。

初聽I Want It That Way，只覺得旋律超易記，但歌詞真的寫得一塌糊塗——大家不要用鑑賞佚名詞作的心態去看待US POP，它們的歌詞本來就只是為了推歌手出場（但偏偏這才是「流行曲」之所以能夠「流行」的要義），一言以蔽之，IWITW超無聊但勁洗腦。而差不多就在album version見光的同時，backstreet.net就已出現I Want It That Way的另一個版本。

當時的說法是，「原版」寫好後，有人覺得歌詞「唔make sense」，於是改寫了第二版，但最終「不知何解」決定用回原版派台。然後就是歷史，BSB直至現在仍會提起這個典故，細節大同小異。對於只看奇事不看正事的我，當然覺得是「執到寶」，還以得知此事為榮。（正如來自紐西蘭的班主任託我找一首BSB在堂上播放，我「加重料」為她找來As Long As You Love Me的peppermint jam remix，那是來自我購買的single。對，那些年我會為BSB買完album再買single）

但其實，兩套歌詞還不是一堆亂填的文字，只是一個版本比另一個版本看似好一點。未出街版本應該沒有定名，一般會抽取副歌一句“no goodbyes”作代號。

直至近年，謎底逐漸浮上水面：BSB的幕後黃金班底——「瑞典小室哲哉」Denniz PoP + Max Martin 的英文都是半桶水，結果這類「demo水平」的歌詞就此直接推了出街，也胡裡胡塗地成就了廿年經典。（Max Martin最令人O嘴的一役，是誤以為”hit me”可解作「打電話俾我」［難道有香港人 DNA？］，於是又一經典爆出，真箇「人旺冇藥醫」）

來到2021年，冇嘢好講……多謝ERROR四子鼓勵我匆匆寫下以上的一段文字作個記錄。

p.s. 信我，Backstreet Boys最好聽的一首抒情歌叫All I Have to Give（AIHTG），而我一定會叫你聽經剪短的radio version（等同MV版，雖則單講MV我都曾經見過兩個版本）。當然重點係——我都有呢張single。KTBSPA
